|
|
|
|
Artist Opportunity: To create large scale paintings for the waiting rooms of the Department of Mental Health offices in Goshen and Port Jervis.
With funding from the Orange County System of Care program, the Department of Mental Health offices in Goshen and Port Jervis are interested in creating large scale paintings for their respective waiting rooms. The project is intended to enhance the physical environment, as well as create a sense of community in both spaces.
Goshen Office
The Goshen office is interested in the creation of a realistically rendered concept painting measuring approximately 4’H X 12’W incorporating the following ideas and concepts:
1. The Mural should:
1. Be welcoming
2. Contain mental health anti-stigma messages (to be provided by Department of Mental Health personnel)
3. Represent Diversity
4. Depict people - families, adults and children
5. Be movable - possibly on stretched canvas (similar to Newburgh Clinic)
2. Possible specific content:
1. Depiction of OC as a map with iconic places and landscapes painted within the shape of the county, possibly as the top of a tree with roots
2. Include "No Decisions About Me Without Me" in the mural, possibly in the root system of the tree or intertwined in a vine, could also be written under a pictorial map
3. Vine wrapping around/through different places and populations throughout the county all intertwined
4. Incorporate leaves with anti-stigma messages
5. Highlighting specific places such as the Black Dirt area of the county, Mountain areas throughout the county, the Hudson River on the east side of the county and Delaware River on the west side of the county, Cities representing Newburgh, Middletown and Port Jervis in their geographical areas on the map, a representation of Parks throughout the county, a representation of several Lakes, a representation of the farming community.
6. Using hand-prints throughout the mural to guide the viewer in the direction of the mural content
7. Pictorial map of OC with "spokes" highlighting OC
Port Jervis Office
The Port Jervis office is interested in the creation of a realistic painting measuring approximately 4’H X 6’W depicting an aerial view of the city from High Point or Point Peter and highlighting some of the more iconic aspects of the city. Personnel from the Port Jervis office will take some reference pictures and then work with the selected artist to decide which picture will be used and which icons should be highlighted. There may be one or two high school students involved in this process as well.
Process
The Orange County Arts Council will act as the liaison between the Department of Mental Health and the artist selected; however the Arts Council will not be involved in the actual selection process. Each location will select the artist they are most interested in working with. Once a selection has been made, the Arts Council will remain involved in all communication between the artist and the Mental Health office personnel. All payment for artistic services will come through the Arts Council. Should initial discussions demonstrate incompatibility between the DMH personnel and the artist, the DMH reserves the right to select a different artist to work with.
CRITERIA:
o Ideally, the paintings will be created on stretched canvas with some type of thin border frame.
o Paintings must be created with the best interests of the work environment and the consumer clientele in mind.
o Artwork must be professionally created using archival media and must not require extraordinary handling. Artwork must also be easily transportable and have the ability to be re-installed as necessary.
o Artist must be willing to work with personnel from the Department of Mental Health offices to come up with a rendering that is acceptable to all involved.
o Artist must complete a final detailed color rendering for DMH approval before work begins on the actual painting.
SUBMISSION PROCESS:
Artists must submit the information as identified below via email:
o A minimum of five (5) and maximum of (10) works demonstrating the breadth of the artist’s creative talent and technical skill.
o Images must be submitted and saved as JPEGS, text as Microsoft Word documents. File names must correspond to annotated image list (see below).

o Two or three concept sketches for each office (artists may choose to respond for only one office OR both offices)
o A list of all associated costs, including time and materials.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Personnel from each of the Department of Mental Health offices will make the decisions for their respective offices
APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 17, 2012. All submissions should be sent to: dawn@ocartscouncil.org. Questions can be directed to Dawn Ansbro at 845-469-9168 or dawn@ocartscouncil.
