| Workshop with Ron Gee |
Chinese calligraphy is an aesthetic tradition thousands of years old respected in Asian cultures as one of the highest art forms. It has had an important influence in many branches of contemporary art yet is generally not well understood, even by those artists who are inspired by it. This introductory workshop will explain the origins of calligraphy and the close link between the chinese writing system, brush & ink painting and Eastern philosophies. The underlying principles and different styles of calligraphic brushwork will be explained as well. Participants will learn the proper way to hold a bamboo brush and how to form the essential brushstrokes through various exercises. We will then proceed to painting basic subjects, such as grass, bamboo, trees and rocks. The workshop will conclude by exploring a more free-form approach as a group exercise.
The workshop fee is $15. An additional lab fee of $10 covers the cost of a brush and small bottle of ink for participants to keep. Other materials will be also be available for purchase.
Open to all. please email janet@jhowardstudios.com to reseverve a place in the workshop. Limited to 15.
