Over the last two decades, research on the ability of the arts to enhance health has increased considerably. There are several promising trends demonstrating that patients’ participation in the arts can reduce the use of pain medication, increase compliance with treatments, and shorten the length of stay in hospitals.
The arts are also being used to create safer hospital environments, introduce nature into clinical settings, and enhance aesthetics through hanging art on empty walls or playing music in the waiting areas. The data indicates that, as a result of this infusion of art, both patient and caregiver stress is measurably reduced, quality of care is increased, and costs of treatment go down.
The Orange County Arts Council is committed to educating Orange County healthcare providers about these findings and helping them connect with the arts community for the benefit of their patients. Some of the Orange County Arts Council’s Arts and Healthcare initiatives include:
- Working with Orange County senior centers to introduce residents to the arts and encourage them to participate
- Supporting county hospitals as they expand their arts programming, develop galleries, and bring more art into their facilities
- Hosting educational conferences on the impact of the arts on different healthcare issues
- The development of a Creative Warriors committee dedicated to finding ways to utilize the arts to benefit Orange County veterans
Whether you are an artist who wants to work in a healthcare environment or a healthcare facility interested in partnering with the arts, give us a call and we’ll get you connected.
