Arts & Education

The arts are an essential part of a complete education for every child.

They teach students valuable lessons—lessons like practice makes perfect, small differences can have large effects, and collaboration leads to creativity.

The arts also teach children that there a several paths to take when approaching problems, and that all problems can have more than one solution.

Research has shown that the arts can have a significant impact on overall school culture, especially student motivation, attitudes, and attendance. Numerous reports discuss the ways that increased access and involvement in arts education encourage students to stay in school, succeed in school, succeed in life, and succeed in work.

There are also reports linking arts education to success in non-arts subjects such as:

  • The connection between drama/theatre and literacy and language development
  • The connections between involvement in music to algebra and to high math SAT scores at the secondary level
  • Middle and High School students with a high engagement in the arts are more likely to perform well on standardized achievement tests and attain high grades, and are less likely to drop out of school.

Involvement in the arts helps students develop creative thinking skills (adaptability, flexibility, imagination, fluency, originality, elaboration), critical thinking skills (comparison, hypothesizing, and critiquing), problem solving, and reasoning skills.
